(CLAIR) – Have you noticed those creepy red bugs everywhere? Those red and black bugs are called box elder bugs, and they’ve been seen crawling all over the backyards and driveways of Simi Valley residents lately.
Adding to the creep-out factor is that box elder bugs have been known to stick together in clumps, shifting and moving in large groups.
Box elder bugs are common pests to the area. However, this year seems to have produced an especially large outbreak of the beetle.
These creepy-crawlies oftentimes congregate on milkweed plants, which can be found around many Simi Valley homes. While they may be a nuisance, box elder bugs are generally harmless to humans and animals. Although, some people may experience an allergic reaction if they are bitten or stung by one of these bugs.
If you are looking to get rid of box elder bugs, there are a few things you can do. You can vacuum them up, seal cracks and crevices where they might enter your home, or treat your yard with an insecticide. While they may be bothersome, with a little effort you can get rid of these pesky pests!
But be warned – they stink when they die!
