(CLAIR) – Residents have organized a one day food barter event, where nothing is for sale and everything is for trade.
One thing Simi Valley has over its LA neighbors, is a little extra space to grow some fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables.
Most Simi residents have a small to medium sized backyard with room to plant and grow a vegetable or two if they needed. Some even have a little more space, with an area for fruit trees and perhaps even an egg-laying chicken.
With food prices skyrocketing, and expectations that food inflation is only going to get worse, Simi residents have been quietly organizing a food barter day.
“What if we could come together as a community and exchange the food we have for the food we need?”, asked Lori Day, a long time Hollow Hills area resident.
Nearly two hundred people commented on Day’s post to the Nextdoor app, discussing the possibility of setting up a one day mini farmers market where nothing is for sale and everything is for trade.
One post read, “I have a few fruit trees on my property and every year I have more oranges, grapefruits, lemons, pomegranates, and avocados than I know what to do with.”
So, it’s on!
There will be a food trading event held on Sunday July 10 between 9am and 11am, on the Northwest corner of Wishard & Erringer. Organizers suggest you arrive early with fruits, veggies or something of value to trade, in order to have access to the best selection.
People are encouraged to bring their own bags for gathering produce, and to bring their own storage containers for fruit juices and other liquids.
“We also hope this event will provide an opportunity to fellowship and talk with our Simi neighbors. We need each other more than ever right now,” said Day.
