From Movie Star Roots to Lonely Cages: The Hidden Lives of Simi Valley’s German Shepherds

It’s Shepherd Week at Ventura County Animal Services, and nearly 60 German Shepherds and shepherd mixes are waiting to begin a new life. These dogs, known for their intelligence, loyalty and resilience, are hoping someone will see them, choose them and give them the home they deserve.

One of them is Cruz, a 6-year-old German Shepherd mix with soft, searching eyes and a quiet spirit. Cruz may be a little shy at first, but volunteers say she quickly warms up with patience, kindness and a treat or two. Found in Ventura, she’s a spayed female weighing 53 pounds, and she’s been available since May 13. Cruz is currently in Kennel 135 at the Camarillo Animal Shelter, and her animal ID is A711478. She’s one of dozens featured during Shepherd Week at vcas.us/shepherdweek—each one hoping for a fresh start.

Stories like Cruz’s echo throughout the shelter, but some journeys stand out. After more than 400 days waiting, McGinty—a striking husky—finally got his chance at happiness. His story reached a woman in Kentucky who had rescued several huskies in the past. Something about McGinty pulled at her heart. She bought a plane ticket, flew across the country, rented a car, and drove him all the way home. Shelter staff shared the moment on Facebook, writing, “You are nothing short of amazing and we know McGinty is going to have the best life ever with you.” He now has a husky sibling and a new world filled with love.

Not everyone is looking for a big dog, and some of the best things really do come in small packages. For those who prefer pint-sized companions, there’s a 4-year-old male Maltese at the Camarillo Shelter, recently found in Oxnard. Weighing just 16 pounds, this sweet dog is currently in Kennel 506 under animal ID A865609. He’ll be ready for adoption beginning Saturday, May 31. He doesn’t have a name yet, but he’s ready to become someone’s loyal little shadow.

Secrets in the Soil? Boeing Faces Scrutiny Over Santa Susana Cleanup Claims

Boeing says it’s making progress at the long-contested Santa Susana Field Lab—but not everyone is convinced.

At the May 28 Legislative Advocacy Forum hosted by the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, community members gathered on Zoom to hear updates on government affairs, legislation and corporate impact in the region.

This month’s spotlight was on Boeing, whose representatives addressed the company’s environmental responsibilities at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL)—a site long at the center of controversy over contamination, cleanup delays and public health concerns.

Representing Boeing were Mark Taylor, director of government operations for California, and Kamara Sams, program director for SSFL. While Taylor recounted the facility’s legacy, Sams detailed Boeing’s ongoing environmental remediation efforts. Some attendees expressed support for the company’s transparency and progress while others pushed back, calling for stronger oversight and deeper accountability.

Boeing’s SSFL Cleanup Plan Faces Mixed Reactions
The SSFL site, perched in the Simi Hills, spans 2,850 acres and holds a complicated legacy of innovation and environmental risk. In his presentation, Mark Taylor described the facility’s transformation from cattle grazing land and Hollywood filming location to a hub of rocket engine testing and nuclear research.

The site was acquired in 1947 for testing rocket engines, predating NASA, and was operated by companies such as Rocketdyne and Atomics International. Nuclear activity at the site ended in 1988 and rocket engine testing concluded in 1996. Boeing acquired the property in 1996 and sold its Rocketdyne division in 2005, but still owns approximately 2,450 acres, which it plans to preserve permanently as open space. Taylor emphasized the site’s ecological and cultural significance, noting its wildlife diversity and archeological ties to the Chumash and Tongva peoples.

America’s 250th Birthday Begins in Simi Valley — And the Reagan Library Is Throwing the First Party

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library will host a major public celebration on July 4, 2025, participating in the national kickoff of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. This event marks the beginning of a year-long commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 — a milestone that will culminate on the nation’s actual 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.

The anniversary, known as “America 250” or “A250,” will be observed across the country, and this Simi Valley event will be among the first large-scale public celebrations to launch the commemorative year. Visitors to the Reagan Library will take part in a day of music, history, games, and community activities.

The celebration begins at 10 a.m. at the Reagan Library, located at 40 Presidential Drive in Simi Valley. All outdoor activities are free to the public. Regular admission is required only for access to the museum, the Air Force One Pavilion, and the featured Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit.

While the 250th birthday of the United States officially falls on July 4, 2026, the Reagan Library’s event on July 4, 2025, serves as the official start of the commemorative period. Organizers emphasize that this is the kickoff to an entire year of reflection, learning, and celebration leading up to the historic anniversary.

The year from July 2025 to July 2026 offers Americans an opportunity to engage with the history, values, and future of the nation. Simi Valley is taking a leading role by hosting this major opening event.

Visitors will encounter historical reenactors portraying the Founding Fathers, bringing the story of 1776 to life. These interpreters will walk the grounds, pose for photos, and speak with families about the events that shaped American independence.

A crisis struck Simi Valley this week. No, not a water main break or a power outage. This one involved Takis — the spicy, rolled tortilla chips known for their tongue-scorching intensity.

It started when Reddit user BlueSoulDragon issued a public service announcement on the r/simivalley subreddit. Their post? “Update on the Takis from Vons.” The verdict: disappointing. “They were powderless.” This wasn’t just about missing flavor — it was a betrayal.

Luckily, salvation came from a nearby Walmart on Tapo Street. “Pretty happy with the powder from this bag,” they wrote. Crisis averted. But the post, now pushing 60 upvotes, sparked more than just snack tips. It opened the floodgates of Takis talk and set the Simi subreddit on fire.

“If you love your snacks to be so hot it becomes a challenge to eat, you’ve come to the right place,” one user noted. Takis aren’t just a snack — they’re a test of willpower. Each chip is so bold, crunchy, and intense, it dares you to keep eating. And you will.

Takis began in Mexico in the 1990s, hitting U.S. shelves around 2004. By the 2010s, they had spread beyond corner stores and school lunchrooms into the mainstream. They are now one of the best-selling snack brands in the world — so popular that many stores, including ones in Simi Valley, struggle to keep them stocked.

The most famous flavors, like Fuego (Hot Chili Pepper & Lime) and Blue Heat, don’t just bring heat — they leave behind blue tongues, stained fingers, and lifelong cravings. Their rolled shape and thick corn base mean each chip packs serious crunch and spice. Not everyone can handle it. But many try.

“Takis are not your average corn chip,” says nearly every fan. “They’re not even the friendly, neighborhood chip.” Takis come with a warning: only the bold survive.
