(CLAIR) – As we head into the backstretch of the 2022-2023 school year, parents of senior students may start wondering about their child’s eligibility to participate in graduation-related activities. One way that schools keep track of this eligibility is through a “senior hold list.”
A senior hold list is a list of senior students who are at risk of not being able to participate in certain graduation-related activities due to a variety of reasons, such as failing grades, outstanding disciplinary issues, or incomplete graduation requirements. The list is typically maintained by the school or district and is used to identify students who need additional support or intervention in order to meet the criteria to participate in graduation.
If your child’s name appears on the senior hold list, the reasons they are on “hold” for graduation will be listed next to their name. It is up to your child to ensure they get clearance from any and all holds. This could include a failing grade in a required class, an outstanding credit needed, outstanding fees, or failure to complete a survey.
To clear any holds, your child should take the following steps:
- For a D or F in a required class for graduation, have the teacher email the counseling office to confirm, in writing, that your child will pass the class.
- For an outstanding credit needed, have your child contact their counselor to be sure all summer school or online class transcripts have been submitted and cleared.
- For outstanding fees due to the ASB office, have your child pay all outstanding balances to the ASB office.
- For outstanding fees due to the library or textbooks not yet returned, have your child turn in the book, pay the fine, and fill out a waiver with the librarian.
- For failure to fill out the senior exit survey, have your child complete it when notified through Naviance.
It is important to note that failing to turn in the senior contract may prevent your child from being able to attend senior activities, but it will not prevent them from graduation and/or the ceremony. Only holds related to grades, credits, and fees would prevent the student from graduating and/or the ceremony
As parents, it is important to stay informed about the senior hold list and to communicate with your child about their eligibility to participate in graduation-related activities. The sooner they take care of any holds, the sooner we can ensure their participation in the graduation ceremony and the receipt of their high school diplomas.
