(CLAIR) – As Simi Valley knows all too well, coyotes are wild animals and pose a real threat to pets in the area. Here are six of the easiest measures we must always remember to take in order to prevent our animals from being injured or killed during the upcoming coyote mating season:
- Keep pets indoors or in a secure enclosure: The most effective way to protect pets from coyotes is to keep them indoors or in a secure enclosure when they are not being supervised. This will prevent them from coming into contact with coyotes and other wild animals.
- Keep pets on a leash: When walking or hiking with pets, keep them on a leash to prevent them from roaming off and coming into contact with coyotes.
- Keep pets away from coyote territory: Coyotes are more likely to be found in areas with a food source, such as parks, golf courses, and residential areas with outdoor trash cans. Avoid taking pets to these areas and keep them away from any areas where coyotes are known to be present.
- Remove attractants: Coyotes are attracted to food sources, so remove any potential attractants from your yard, such as outdoor trash cans, bird feeders, and fallen fruit.
- Secure trash cans: Make sure that trash cans are securely covered and stored in a secure location to prevent coyotes from accessing them.
- Keep a close eye on pets: When pets are outside, keep a close eye on them, think ahead and be prepared to intervene if a coyote appears. Make loud noises, throw objects, or use a hose to scare the coyote away.
By following these measures, Simi pet owners can help to prevent their pets from being attacked and keep them safe from harm.
