(CLAIR) – On January 9, 2023, the City of Simi Valley officially declared January 11, 2023 as Human Trafficking Awareness Day. The proclamation was presented to members of Soroptimist International of Simi Valley, a local organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls.
The ceremony, which was presided over by Mayor Thomas, was particularly emotional as his late wife, Debbie Thomas, was the founder of the Soroptimist Club in Simi Valley. Mayor Thomas praised the organization for their ongoing efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking and to support survivors of this heinous crime.
“Human trafficking is a global problem that affects millions of people, particularly women and children,” said Mayor Thomas. “We must all work together to end this modern-day slavery and provide support to those who have been affected by it.”
Members of the Soroptimist Club expressed their gratitude for the proclamation and pledged to continue their efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking in the community. They also invited the public to join them in their upcoming events and activities to raise awareness about this issue.
Human Trafficking Awareness Day serves as a reminder for all to be vigilant in recognizing the signs of human trafficking and to take action to end this form of exploitation. The City of Simi Valley encourages all residents to learn more about this issue and to support local organizations working to combat human trafficking.
