(CLAIR) – The city of Simi Valley is one step closer to receiving its Official International City of Peace designation. This achievement was made possible by the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise, who have organized a number of peace-related events and have been actively promoting peace initiatives within the community. To commemorate this occasion, hundreds of brightly painted rocks were placed near the entrance at Corriganville Park.
The rocks were painted by Simi Valley students from Valley View and Monte Vista, as well as by kids involved in the Parks and Rec after-school program. The art on each rock is to symbolize peace and unity within the community. The Corriganville display was installed by friends, family, and neighbors of the Rotary Club.
International Cities of Peace is a United Nations affiliated organization set up to recognize communities that have officially declared themselves Cities of Peace through proclamations, resolutions, or by citizen advocacy.
The organization believes that every community has a legacy of peace, whether it is through a historical event or by local peace heroes or groups who have contributed to the safety, prosperity, and quality of life of their citizens.
They also state that no city is 100% a city of peace, but all are on the path of becoming more peaceful. Recognizing a community as a City of Peace acknowledges past accomplishments, encourages current efforts, and inspires future generations to build peace.
The painted rocks serve as a visual reminder of the community’s goal to work towards a more peaceful society, both as individuals and as a community. The rocks will remain on display at Corriganville Park through November. The Rotary Club volunteers hope that this is just the beginning of their efforts.
“If we can start with a group like this, over time we can make this special designation something truly meaningful for the residents of our city,” said John Baxter, one of the volunteers involved in the City of Peace application process.
“Placing the rocks shows unity and friendship,” said Rotary Club President, Laura Berger.
“The peace rocks will be used to beautify the park and serve as a reminder of Simi’s commitment to peace,” said Berger.
This display is a large visual symbol of the community’s dedication to peace and unity. The Rotary Club hopes it will inspire others to join in their efforts to create a more peaceful society.
