(CLAIR) – If you grew up in the LA Unified School District, you might remember the legendary LAUSD Old Fashioned Coffee Cake. This yummy piece of cake has been a staple in the district for over 70 years, and its popularity has only grown over time.
For decades, people have been searching for the secret recipe to this delicious coffee cake. Some have tried to recreate it at home, while others have been on a quest to find it in the wild. Well, the search is over, as we have found the original 1954 LAUSD coffee cake recipe.
This recipe is sure to bring back memories and create new ones. You can now make it for your kids, or for yourself, at home any time you want. So, let’s get started. Let’s make the most delicious school coffee cake you will ever consume.
1954 LAUSD Coffee Cake Recipe:
2½ Cups – Bakers Flour
1 Cup – Brown Sugar (packed)
½ Cup + 1 Tbsp. – Granulated Sugar
1 Tsp. Salt
1 Tsp. Nutmeg
¾ Cup Vegetable Oil
1 Tsp. Cinnamon
1 Tsp. Baking Soda
1 Tsp. Baking Powder
1 Egg (large)
1 Cup Buttermilk
In a large bowl, combine Flour, Brown Sugar, Granulated Sugar, Salt, Nutmeg and Vegetable Oil. Mix until crumbly.
Reserve ½ Cup of this mixture and set aside for topping. To this add the Cinnamon
Add Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Egg and Buttermilk to the bowl
Blend together but do not over mix.
Pour into a greased 9″ x 13″ baking pan.
Sprinkle reserved cinnamon mixture over the top of the batter
Bake at 350° to 375° for 25 to 30 minutes.
Remove from oven and allow it to cool. Of course, serve with hot coffee!
