(CLAIR) – Simi Valley may soon be able to join the ranks of cities that host weekly food truck events, similar to the Granada Hills Grubfest.
The Grubfest, which takes place every Friday night in Granada Hills, boasts over 35 gourmet food trucks and is one of the largest ongoing food events of its kind in California. Thousands of people from the community flock to the two-block stretch of Chatsworth Street to enjoy the delicious offerings and festive atmosphere.
Now, the planning commission in Simi Valley has voted unanimously to recommend allowing food trucks to legally operate on commercial and industrial properties in the city. While food trucks that prepare food in the vehicle are currently only allowed during special events, this change to the ordinance would permit them to operate on a more regular basis.
The benefits of hosting a weekly food truck event in Simi Valley are numerous. Not only would it provide a fun and unique experience for local residents, but it could also bring in additional tax revenue and foot traffic to other businesses in the area.
While some restaurant owners are concerned about competition from food trucks, the planning commission believes that a 300-foot distance requirement from brick-and-mortar restaurants is a reasonable way to temper competition. Additionally, the commission has set guidelines for food truck operations, including requiring permits for each location and not allowing trucks to operate between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
With benefits to both the local economy and the community at large, a weekly food truck event during the summer months might be a tasty proposition for Simi Valley residents to consider.
