(CLAIR) – The mystery of Donda Academy has been the talk of Southern California ever since Kanye West first mentioned it in an interview with ABC News. The private Christian school is located on the outskirts of Simi Valley, on Tierra Rejada Road.
Named after West’s late mother, the school has been shrouded in secrecy since its inception. Reports suggest parents and employees are being asked to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Despite being in operation for a few years, Donda Academy has yet to be accredited, which could cause issues for graduating seniors who may not have their credits or diplomas recognized by colleges. Furthermore, two former employees have filed a lawsuit against Kanye West and three of the school’s directors, claiming the rapper violated health and safety codes.
Despite all of this, Donda Academy still managed to attract the attention of high-school basketball players from out of state, many of whom were recruited before the start of the school year. However, Ye’s recent controversies resulted in the school being excluded from several high-profile basketball tournaments.
The situation has only gotten more confusing in recent months. In October of 2022, the Academy reportedly sent an email to parents announcing that it was shutting down for the rest of the school year, with plans to “begin afresh in 2023.” However, hours later, the school reportedly sent a follow-up email announcing that it would be open again later that week. It’s still unclear whether the school has actually reopened.
The school’s website claims that it has a ten-to-one student-to-teacher ratio and that students “learn fundamentals, grow in their faith, and experience two enrichment classes.” However, it’s unclear who the teachers are, as none are identified on the website or the school’s LinkedIn page. The school promises “experienced educators” with “an uncompromised passion for creating lifelong learners and Christ-followers.”
Despite all of the mystery surrounding Donda Academy, one thing is clear: Kanye West is passionate about the school and its mission. In his interview with ABC News, he called it a “gospel school” focused on helping give “kids practical tools that they need in a world post the iPhone being created.” With the end of the school year approaching, it remains to be seen what will happen to Donda Academy and whether it will be able to fulfill its ambitious goals for the future.
