(CLAIR) – This week, the Rotary Club of Simi Sunset took to the stage to proudly announce the recipients of their highly anticipated Grant Allocation Awards. It was an evening of festive energy and surprises, set against the backdrop of an elegant Italian dinner.
Amidst the excitement, one notable surprise stood out—a moment of well-deserved recognition for the Chamber of Commerce CEO, Kathi VanEtten, who was honored with the prestigious Paul Harris Award.
Mayor Fred Thomas was present along with Council Member Elaine Litster.
Adding a touch of youthful exuberance to the evening, a Daisy Girl Scout momentarily stole the spotlight with an unexpected jump from the stage. The room erupted in laughter and applause, reminding everyone present of the joy and spontaneity that lies at the heart of community engagement.
However, the true essence of the night lay in the remarkable allocation of funds to an unprecedented number of local nonprofits. The Rotary Club of Simi Sunset reached new heights this year, allocating much-needed funds to the highest number of deserving organizations in the history of the club. This milestone represents the collective impact that can be achieved when a community comes together to support and uplift those in need.
Guiding the evening’s festivities was the club’s Past President, Mike Kort, who served as the master of ceremonies. In his opening remarks, Mike set the tone for a night of celebration, reflection, and appreciation. He highlighted the exceptional work accomplished by the club members over the past year, emphasizing their dedication, creativity, and achievements.
The Rotary Club of Simi Sunset organized an impressive array of events this year, ranging from vital community blood drives, toy, and food drives to programs that delivered new clothing and shoes to youth in need.
“Witnessing the club in action is a testament to the compassion and energy that binds individuals together,” Kort said.
Throughout the year, the club’s dedication was further exemplified by their successful execution of three major fundraisers. These collective efforts resulted in the most substantial funds ever raised in the 21-year history of the club’s charter.
“None of this would be possible without the generosity and support of the Simi community, as well as the unwavering commitment of club members,” Kort said.
One by one, the award recipients took to the stage to share their story. Each showcased the diversity of initiatives and dedication to serving others.
The founders of 99.1 The Ranch radio station expressed deep appreciation for the community’s support and highlighted the essential role played by each community member. They reflected on their 30-year journey of community involvement, emphasizing the city’s resilience and unity during times of disasters.
Mayor Thomas, representing the Simi Valley Police Foundation, discussed his dedication to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the local police department.
The representatives from Boy Scout Troop 698 emphasized that their program extends beyond teaching survival skills and focuses on imparting valuable life lessons to the scouts. They highlighted the development of practical skills and personal management.
Dorina Timbol, executive director of For The Need Foundation, described the organization’s crucial work in providing life skills to families in shelters. Their goal is to assist these families in transitioning out of homelessness and achieving self-sufficiency.
The President of Moorpark College, Dr. Julius Sokenu, offered heartfelt thanks for the Rotary’s support and collaboration. He highlighted the college’s impact in preparing students for higher education and the workforce while ensuring accessibility for all communities.
Cancer Support Service of Ventura conveyed sincere thanks for their award, noting that this grant gives them the ability to introduce their organization’s invaluable services to many more cancer patients and their families.
Fred Bauermeister, Executive Director of the Free Clinic of Simi Valley, thanked club members for their support of the clinic’s mission. He highlighted their expansion of services, including dental hygiene facilities and tattoo removal.
Two representatives from Daisy Girl Scout Troop 65437, accompanied by a Troop Dad, delivered a thoughtful speech expressing their gratitude for the Rotary club’s support.
Marcelle Erian Cancer Foundation’s mission is to provide support to cancer patients and their families. They shared their deep appreciation and thanks for their grant award and thanked Sunset Rotary for their ongoing assistance.
Nikki and Gabby, co-owners of Body Brain Train, conveyed their unwavering dedication to promoting fitness and wellness in the senior and Parkinson’s communities.
Annika Sumby, Executive Director of The Samaritan Center, spoke about their organization’s role as a homeless drop-in center. She acknowledged the provision of essential services such as meals, shower and laundry facilities, and case management.
An enthusiastic Community Action of Ventura County rounded out the evening’s list of award recipients, highlighting their wide range of services, including homeless assistance, community market initiatives, workshops, and utility assistance.
The evening concluded with the recognition of Simi Valley VFW Post 10049, underscoring the importance of refurbishing their facility and honoring their commitment to serving veterans.
This year, the Rotary Club of Simi Sunset allocated their hard-earned funds to the highest number of local nonprofits ever. In his closing remarks, Mike Kort thanked all of the award recipients and extended his sincere appreciation to the club members and all in attendance.
