(CLAIR) – This summer, we will see a significant transformation unfold at Santa Susana Plaza, a well-known fixture on Tapo Street in our community. The north end of the plaza is poised for demolition, leading to the construction of a mixed-use development that will bring 280 new apartments to Simi Valley.
“We’ve needed something like this for a while,” says Maria Usheco, a longtime resident. “It’s going to bring much needed life to this area. Tapo used to be Simi’s main street.”
Gerrity Group, the developer, is focusing on replacing underutilized retail space with a blend of residential and commercial units. This project is not just about constructing new buildings; it’s about revitalizing the local community.
“I remember when Blockbuster was there,” reminisces John Carpenter, a Simi Valley local. “It’s bittersweet to see the old buildings go, but the new development sounds interesting.”
The project includes a variety of apartments, from studios to two-bedroom units, addressing the city’s growing housing needs. The ground floor will feature 4,750 square feet dedicated to local businesses, restaurants, and services.
“The addition of these apartments and shops is the right move. It’s what our kids will need to keep our community thriving,” says local business owner, Anita Patel.
With the support of the Simi Valley City Council, the project aligns with the mixed-use zoning of the area, ensuring the inclusion of 14 affordable units. This reflects the community’s commitment to balanced growth and development.
“There’s a real need for affordable housing here,” notes Patel. “This project is a step in the right direction.”
The redevelopment has undergone multiple reviews, ensuring that it meets the needs and standards of the Simi Valley community.
The southern half of the mall, including Walmart and Joann’s will be upgraded to match the new development’s contemporary Spanish architecture.
The plan also includes a half-acre park and community spaces, envisioning Santa Susana Plaza as a new hub for our city.
This development is a significant step for Simi Valley, balancing growth with community needs. With a target completion date in 2026, Santa Susana Plaza is set to become not just a place to shop and live but a vibrant center for community life in Simi Valley.
