(CLAIR) – The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District is set to present a beloved local tradition with the Annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Rancho Simi Community Park, on Royal Ave. The derby, steeped in community spirit, offers young anglers aged 15 and under a chance to showcase their fishing skills in a friendly and competitive environment.
Participants are asked to bring their own fishing poles and bait and must be accompanied by an adult. The derby is free, providing a fun, cost-effective outdoor activity for families.
The setting for this year’s event is the Rancho duck park’s scenic lagoon, a significant change from the vast Mississippi River that inspired the event’s namesake, Huck Finn. While the young participants may not be using the simple bamboo poles of Huck Finn’s time, the excitement of reeling in a big catch remains unchanged.
The park district has stocked the lagoon with over 1,500 pounds of fish to increase the chances of a successful catch. With the event starting at 6:30 a.m., dedicated anglers and their families are expected to arrive early to secure the best fishing spots.
Prizes will be awarded in three age categories for various achievements including the first to catch their limit—either three catfish or five trout—and for the heaviest and smallest catfish caught. A grand prize will also be awarded for the longest fish. These prizes, which include fishing gear and other outdoor equipment, are generously donated by local businesses. The Simi Valley Elks Lodge and American Trophies and Awards are sponsoring trophies and ribbons.
In line with responsible fishing practices, the park district encourages all participants to release their catches back into the lagoon once they have been measured and recorded by the event judges.
