(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Some community members in Simi Valley have suggested introducing night bus or shuttle services. They believe this could support local restaurants and bars, enhance public safety, and better utilize the city’s transit system. This suggestion comes as local businesses continue to recover from the disastrous impacts of the covid pandemic.
The Simi Valley Transit system, primarily funded by the State of California, often runs with few passengers. Advocates argue that extending bus service hours into the night could attract more riders. This would make better use of the existing infrastructure and ensure the city fully utilizes the roughly $2 million annual reimbursement and funding from the state.
Critics argue that extending service hours may not significantly increase ridership. They point out the low daytime usage could indicate a lack of demand. They also highlight the additional operational costs, questioning if the benefits would outweigh these expenses.
Economic Benefits for Local Restaurants
One primary motivation behind evening bus services is to support local restaurants and bars. These businesses have faced significant challenges, especially during the pandemic. Providing a safe transportation option for residents could increase foot traffic and boost sales.
Skeptics question whether night bus services would significantly impact patronage. They argue that many patrons prefer the convenience of rideshare services. They also doubt that bus schedules and routes would appeal to most Simi Valley residents. Additionally, they question if the economic benefit justifies the increased operational costs.
Enhancing Nightlife and Community Safety
Night shuttles would contribute to a more vibrant nightlife in Simi Valley. Restaurants and bars are essential to an engaging evening scene. They attract both residents and visitors. Providing a safe transportation alternative can also reduce the risks associated with drinking and driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 32% of all traffic fatalities involve alcohol-impaired drivers. Night bus services would encourage safe socializing without the fear of driving under the influence.
Some residents are concerned about potential noise and increased traffic in residential areas at night. Many people love Simi Valley’s quiet small town feel. There is also skepticism about whether night buses would significantly deter drinking and driving. Many people might still prefer riding with a designated driver or using rideshare services.
Utilizing State Funding Effectively
Advocates highlight the importance of utilizing state transportation funds effectively. By extending bus services into the night, Simi Valley can ensure these funds are fully used for the community’s benefit.
On the other hand, critics argue that focusing on nighttime services could divert resources from improving daytime services. They believe this might be a more effective use of funds. They also highlight the potential for increased costs without a guaranteed increase in ridership.
Right now, the suggestion to introduce night bus services in Simi Valley has some initial support from community members. They see it as a strategic move to support local businesses, enhance public safety, and make better use of state funding. However, it also faces opposition from those concerned with costs, effectiveness, and the overall impact on the community.
Simi Valley Transit appreciates community support and welcomes input to help meet public transportation needs. By working together, the community can create a safer, more dynamic, and prosperous environment for all.
The buses run almost empty most of the time. Also they take way to long to get from the one end of the valley to the other. For some reason they all stop at the Civic Center for 10m minutes which makes the trip longer The Mall which needs foot traffic is only served by one of the three bus lines and that bus line runs about every hour to an hour and a half. They should consider using smaller busses if it would save money.
