(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — In 1884, the world’s oldest running car, La Marquise, first hit the roads. Built by French engineer De Dion-Bouton, this steam-powered vehicle is still in operation today, a testament to early automotive ingenuity. Powered by steam, coal, and water, La Marquise was noisy, slow, and required constant attention, yet it was a groundbreaking achievement in its time.
Now, over 140 years later, Simi Valley is embracing the latest automotive revolution with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), marked by the opening of our second new Tesla Supercharger on Erringer Road, at the Holiday Inn Express.
Tesla’s sleek EVs, including the futuristic Cybertruck, are becoming common sights around Simi Valley. Recently, several Cybertrucks have been spotted charging at the new Supercharger station, drawing attention with their distinctive, angular design. This modern innovation is worlds apart from the clunky, steam-powered La Marquise, yet both vehicles symbolize major leaps forward in automotive technology.
Also spotted at Simi Valley’s charging stations are Rivian vehicles, another American-made electric brand gaining popularity. Seeing these advanced EVs parked and charging around town underscores how far we’ve come since the days of old.
The shift from steam to electric reflects a broader change in the community’s approach to transportation. In the 1800s, La Marquise represented a new way to travel without horses. Today, electric vehicles offer a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient way to move, supported by the growing network of charging stations, including the latest Supercharger installation.
The city’s investment in EV infrastructure is paying off. More charging stations are popping up around town, supporting not just Tesla drivers but all EV owners. This commitment to building a sustainable future is attracting more locals to switch to electric.
“Seeing Cybertrucks and Rivians charging side by side is exciting,” said Sarah Collins, a Tesla owner and Simi Valley resident. “It’s interesting when you think about how much technology has changed since the days of those old steam cars.”
As Simi continues to expand its EV infrastructure, it’s clear the city is ready for the next chapter in automotive history. From an industry’s steam-powered beginnings to the electric cars of today, whether we like it or not, we’re all part of a journey that’s still unfolding—one charge at a time.
