(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) – The Annual Fredrick Michael Gibson 5K/10K & Half Marathon Walk/Run is back, inviting Simi Valley and surrounding communities to run, walk, and rally for a critical cause on October 13, 2024. Hosted by the Free Clinic of Simi Valley, this event isn’t just about clocking in miles; it’s about bringing awareness to the often-overlooked battle against depression and supporting those who might be struggling in silence. With a range of events, from the Half Marathon starting at 7:00 AM to the 5K and 10K races at 8:15 AM, and a Kids Run at 9:30 AM, there’s something for everyone. Virtual participants can also join from anywhere, making it an event that unites people near and far for an important cause.
The Free Clinic of Simi Valley has been providing free medical care and essential services to the community since 1971. As a non-profit, it offers medical, counseling, dental, legal, and ophthalmology services at no cost, relying entirely on grants and donations. The Clinic is committed to compassionate, person-centered care for all, regardless of background or financial situation. Thanks to its dedicated volunteers and small staff, the Clinic continues to make a significant impact on the lives of those who lack access to traditional healthcare.
Joining the event is simple and open to everyone. Register on RaceWire, invite your friends, or bring your family along. Whether you choose to run, walk, wear a fun costume, or create supportive signs, the focus is on having fun.
Over the years, this event has become a strong platform for promoting mental health awareness. When the Clinic first added a race to the Community Health Expo in 2010, it started as the Tooth Fairy Fun Run, supporting pediatric dental programs. In 2017, the Clinic expanded its mission to focus on raising awareness about depression and enhancing support for mental health services. This shift underscores the Clinic’s dedication to tackling important issues that affect so many lives in the Simi Valley community.
The race now bears the name of Fredrick Michael Gibson, a bright and talented young man who tragically lost his battle with depression in 2014 while completing his studies at UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy. Despite his remarkable accomplishments, including a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from UC Davis and pioneering research on the AIDS virus, Fredrick struggled with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. His family and friends remember him as a kind, loving, and passionate person who enjoyed tennis, video games, and time with loved ones. Naming the race after Fredrick is a tribute to his memory and a reminder that depression can impact anyone, regardless of their achievements.
Event organizers are encouraging everyone to “join us on October 13, 2024, to run, walk, and raise your voice for those who need it most. Every step taken is a step toward hope, awareness, and a more supportive community.”
If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, reach out to a mental health professional or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK. Let’s come together, support one another, and make a difference—one step at a time.
