(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — The third annual 13 Souls Memorial Run/Walk/Ride took place on Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Simi Valley, paying tribute to the 13 U.S. service members who lost their lives in the Kabul airport bombing on August 26, 2021. The event, which commemorates the Marines, sailor, and soldier killed in the attack, serves as both a memorial and a fundraiser to support scholarship and memorial funds established by the families of the fallen.
The event began at the Simi Valley Metrolink Station with an early morning memorial ceremony, which included a flyover by three aircraft. Organizer Jeff Von Molt, whose son survived the bombing, spoke about the purpose of the event. “They gave so much, not just the people that died, but those families gave up a child,” Von Molt said. “We’re here to honor and respect them—that’s the most important part.”
The untimed run/walk/ride featured several course options, including a 1k, 5k, 10k, and half-marathon. Each mile of the course was dedicated to one of the 13 fallen service members, with participants reflecting on their sacrifices throughout the event. The route stretched along the Arroyo, starting at the Metrolink Station and covering 13.1 miles in total.
Funds raised from the event will be directed to scholarship and memorial programs established by the families of the 13 service members. David Mayorquin, one of the participants, expressed his motivation for joining the run. “I’m here to support the 13 Souls run and support the 13 who lost their lives,” he said. “And if running could help that, I’m glad to be here.”
The 13 Souls Memorial Run/Walk/Ride not only honors the fallen but also serves as a community gathering to celebrate life and the freedoms protected by those who serve. Participants and volunteers continue to support the cause, ensuring that the memories of the 13 service members will be preserved for years to come.
