(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) – The City of Simi Valley is grieving the loss of Mayor Fred D. Thomas, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the age of 67. His passing marks the end of a life devoted to public service and the betterment of the community.
Fred Thomas was elected as mayor in 2022, following a long line of distinguished leaders in Simi Valley’s history. From the groundbreaking leadership of Ginger Gherardi, the city’s first female mayor, to the long-serving Gregory Stratton, Thomas honored this legacy while charting a path uniquely his own. His focus on infrastructure, public safety, and thoughtful growth shaped his time in office and left a lasting impact on the city.
More than a leader, Fred Thomas was a champion for community organizations. His commitment to local nonprofits was central to his life’s work. He served on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley for over 20 years, including four years as president. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to expand programs supporting youth and families. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Boys & Girls Club Champion of Youth Award in 2021.
Thomas was also an active member of the Simi Valley Police Foundation, where he served as president for three years. He supported efforts to enhance public safety through community outreach and funding initiatives that directly benefited the city’s residents. His passion for youth advocacy extended to his involvement with the Simi Valley Gang Task Force and the Crime Prevention Task Force, where he worked to build safer neighborhoods and opportunities for at-risk youth.
In a heartfelt statement, long time resident, Larry Borovay reflected on his legacy: “Mayor Fred Thomas embodied the spirit of service and dedication that defines our community. His commitment to nonprofits and his leadership in government were inseparable parts of his mission to uplift Simi Valley. His passing is a profound loss for all who knew and worked with him.”
Outside of public service, Thomas was the founder of Aaron, Thomas & Associates, a successful direct mail marketing and commercial printing company. His entrepreneurial spirit informed his approach to leadership, always striving for balance between progress and sustainability.
Born in 1957, Fred Thomas moved to Simi Valley in 1994, drawn by the community’s character and values. He is survived by his daughters, Brandee (Brandon) and Kristen (Jay), his grandchildren, Shane and Summer, and his partner, Ashley. His family remembers him as a kind and generous man who found joy in service and cherished his role as a father and grandfather.
Details about a memorial service will be announced in the coming days. The City Council is scheduled to meet on January 27 to discuss ways to honor his legacy.
