(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Michelle Ascencion, Ventura County’s Clerk-Recorder, has been named the 2025 Woman of the Year for California’s 38th Assembly District. Assemblymember Steve Bennett honored her on March 10 at the State Capitol in Sacramento. But why should this matter to Simi Valley residents?
Ascencion’s role directly impacts residents across the county, including those in Simi Valley. As the official responsible for elections, public records, and vital documents, she oversees essential services that residents rely on. From processing birth certificates to ensuring fair and efficient elections, her work helps keep county operations running smoothly.
Simi Valley is one of the largest cities in the county, with more than 80,000 registered voters. Every ballot cast here passes through the systems her office oversees. Under her leadership, the county successfully managed two major elections in 2024, including the high-turnout presidential election.
Beyond elections, Ascencion has focused on community education. Her Election Smart! blog and outreach efforts help voters better understand the process. This matters in Simi Valley, where civic engagement is strong.
“For me, public service is about putting your head down and working hard to give back to the community that raised you,” she said. “To be recognized for that work is a huge honor.”
Ascencion’s public service career spans nearly 20 years, including roles with the City of Port Hueneme, the Ventura Regional Sanitation District, and as Oxnard’s City Clerk. She is also the first woman and person of color elected to her current position in Ventura County’s history.
Simi Valley residents should care because efficient local government impacts daily life. Whether registering to vote, checking property records, or filing important documents, Ascencion’s office plays a key role in maintaining access to these services. Her recognition highlights the importance of public service and the work being done behind the scenes to support Ventura County.
