The Most Inspiring Women’s Event in Simi This Month Is Also the Most Fun

An evening of connection and purpose could lead to something even bigger.

That’s the spirit behind “Together We Grow,” an open house hosted by Soroptimist International of Simi Valley. The free event takes place Thursday, May 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Tierra Rejada Golf Course’s clubhouse in Moorpark. According to the organization’s website, it’s a relaxed dinner gathering where guests can meet members, hear stories, and learn how Soroptimists work to support women and girls through education and mentorship.

“Our goal is to help women and girls become financially independent through education. We also have a very strong sisterhood,” said Amy Corneau, the club’s Director of Membership and Immediate Past President.

Soroptimist International of Simi Valley, founded in 2015, is part of a global volunteer movement with one mission: educate, empower, and enable. The organization helps women and girls gain access to the education and training they need to achieve economic independence. Through local and international programs like the Live Your Dream Awards and Dream It, Be It, Soroptimists provide more than encouragement—they offer tools, guidance, and support to help women overcome obstacles and move forward.

The club’s work includes the Live Your Dream Awards, which offer financial aid to women who are the primary earners in their households, helping them continue their education and secure better jobs. The Dream It, Be It program brings career support and confidence-building to girls in secondary school through mentoring sessions and hands-on activities.

Over the years, the club has organized events like the Little Black Dress fundraiser, which blends social gathering with mission-driven giving. They’ve also presented the Apathy Effect Exhibit to raise awareness about human trafficking and hosted Walk for Women to celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.

No Sirens, No Speeches—Just Coffee: A Chance For Residents To Meet Their Simi Valley Police

There’s no podium. No fanfare. Just representatives from the Simi Valley Police Department—some in uniform, some not—sharing a morning coffee with neighbors from all walks of life.

At 9 a.m., members of the Simi Valley Police Department will gather at Meera: Coffee & Plants—1555 Simi Town Center Way, Suite 850—for another round of “Coffee with a Cop.”

Chief Steve Shorts will be there.
He said Coffee with a Cop gives officers, detectives and other SVPD employees the opportunity to meet residents face to face—without sirens, urgency or incident reports. “It’s a chance for the community to have conversations with our folks in a casual environment,” Shorts said.

He explained that these types of gatherings let officers connect with people before there’s a problem. Often, the first time someone interacts with police is during a stressful or urgent situation. Events like this give both sides a chance to talk and get to know each other in a friendly setting—when no one is in crisis.

Just days earlier, SVPD was out at the May 3 Street Fair, also held at the Town Center. Officers mingled with community members, met with local business owners and employees, and brought along their department mascot, Chase—offering photos and fist bumps to kids and grown-ups alike. It was another reminder that SVPD is woven into the fabric of the city, showing up not just in emergencies but in everyday community life.

With a focus on respect, collaboration, and self-motivation, Carolyn fosters a sense of belonging and shared responsibility. In doing so, she builds a foundation that helps students step into middle school with readiness and resilience.

The Teacher of the Month program, led by the Simi Valley Education Foundation, celebrates educators throughout the Simi Valley Unified School District who make a lasting difference in their school communities. Each month during the school year, one outstanding teacher is selected for their excellence in teaching and their dedication to student success.

What If Your Grandchildren Could Read Your Life Story—In Your Own Words?

The Simi Valley Senior Center is offering local seniors a unique opportunity to preserve their personal histories through a new, innovative program: The Legacy Story Writing Class.

This free six-week course is designed to help older adults reflect on their life experiences and transform cherished memories into written stories. With the assistance of a custom-trained AI writing assistant, participants can effortlessly recall details they may have long forgotten, including specific dates and events that shaped their lives.

“Everyone has a story worth telling,” says Daniel Jordan, who will be leading the class. “Our goal is to help seniors preserve their legacy, whether it’s for their family, their community, or simply for themselves.”

The AI tool serves as a gentle guide, prompting memories and organizing thoughts, making the writing process accessible and enjoyable. Participants don’t need any prior writing experience—just a willingness to share and reflect.

For many, the becomes more than just storytelling; it’s a powerful way to connect with others, revisit meaningful chapters of their lives, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

The Legacy Story Writing Class meets weekly at the Simi Valley Senior Center. Spots are limited, and early registration is encouraged. If classes fill up, there will be a waitlist for the next class.

REAL ID Deadline Means Big Changes at Airports and Government Buildings

You’ve probably heard it before, but this time it’s real: starting May 7, the federal government will require a REAL ID, U.S. passport, or other approved identification to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings—and Ventura County officials say now is the time to act.

Clerk-Recorder Michelle Ascencion said her office is already seeing an uptick in birth certificate requests, as residents prepare to meet the federal standards before the May deadline. For people in Simi Valley, this means making sure you have the documents you must present—especially a certified copy of your birth certificate, which is required to apply for either a REAL ID or a passport if you don’t already have one.

Anyone born in Ventura County—or their parent, sibling, child, grandchild, or spouse—can request a certified birth certificate through the Ventura County Clerk-Recorder’s Office. It can be done in person by appointment at the Ventura office, by mail with notarization, or online through the secure VitalChek portal. A valid photo ID is required for in-person requests, and the cost per certified copy is $29, with additional fees for card payments or mailing.

To apply for a REAL ID through the California DMV, you must appear in person and bring proof of identity, Social Security number, and two documents showing your current address. A passport is a valid alternative if you choose not to update your driver’s license, but passport processing times currently take several weeks, and DMV appointments are booking up quickly.

Appointments for REAL ID are available online at both the Simi Valley DMV (3855-A Alamo Street) and Thousand Oaks DMV (1810 E. Avenida De Los Arboles). Both locations are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and REAL ID transactions are available during regular office hours. Appointments can be made at dmv.ca.gov.
