(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — At the Simi Valley Animal Shelter, two dogs with very different personalities are spending their days in the kennels—one sticking to the back where it’s a little less noisy, the other greeting visitors with a hopeful tail wag and bright eyes.
Morgan (Animal ID: A861389), a two-year-old Doberman Pinscher and Labrador Retriever mix, isn’t the kind of dog who demands attention. If there’s a quiet spot, Morgan will find it. That’s just his way—low-key, observant, and easy to be around. He’s a big dog, about 70 pounds, but you’d hardly notice. There’s no drama with Morgan. Just a calm presence and the occasional glance that says, I’d sit with you if you let me.
He came to the shelter from Fillmore back in February. We don’t know much about his past—what he’s been through or where he’s been—but like a lot of dogs who end up here, he’s doing his best to adjust and hold onto hope. With a little patience and kindness, Morgan is the kind of companion who shows up for you every day in quiet, steady ways.
And maybe the best part? Morgan looks like he’s just waiting for someone to clip on a leash and take him out to explore—somewhere green, somewhere quiet, just the two of you. He’s not in a rush. He just wants to go home.
Rusty (Animal ID: A777298) is a five-year-old Border Terrier mix who weighs just 23 pounds, picked up in Oxnard earlier this month. Where Morgan hangs back, Rusty steps forward. He watches every move with curious eyes, head tilted like he’s trying to make sense of the world—and maybe of you, too.

His scruffy face and small frame draw attention, but it’s his spirit that stays with you. We don’t know what his days looked like before he got here, but Rusty seems more than ready for something new. He’s the kind of dog who would quickly fall into rhythm with a good human—tagging along from room to room, never far behind.
Morgan and Rusty are very different dogs, but they have one thing in common: they’re both hoping for a shot at something better. A place to land. A human to trust.
If one of them has already been adopted, that’s something to celebrate. But remember—there are still plenty of dogs waiting for someone to come along and say, “Let’s figure this out together.” You can meet Morgan, Rusty, and many others at the Simi Valley Animal Shelter, located at 670 W. Los Angeles Avenue. The shelter is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and closed Mondays and major holidays. To learn more, call (805) 388-4341 or visit www.vcas.us.
Stop by. Spend a little time. The dog you’ve been looking for might already be there, waiting.
