(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — After years of climbing prices at the pump, drivers across California โ including here in Ventura County โ are finally catching a break. Gas prices have dropped to their lowest Memorial Day average in four years, falling to $3.19 per gallon nationally, according to AAA. While Californiaโs prices are still higher, the slowdown in increases has been enough to give a green light to summer travel plans.
From the beaches of Ventura to the winding roads of the Central Coast, this drop is good news for anyone thinking about a weekend getaway or family road trip. Simi Valley residents, often just a tank of gas away from Pismo Beach, Big Sur, or Santa Barbara, are expected to hit the road in bigger numbers this summer.
AAA estimates more than 39 million Americans drove at least 50 miles over the Memorial Day weekend. Thatโs the highest number in over two decades โ and lower gas prices are helping to fuel the surge.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration says that from January to May, gas prices only went up 4%. Thatโs a major change from previous years, when prices rose nearly five times as much during that same period. A more stable supply of fuel means stations arenโt under pressure to push prices up quickly. For drivers, that stability means more affordable travel.
The benefits could stretch well beyond one holiday weekend. The EIA forecasts a 3% drop in average gas prices in 2025 compared to last year, and a 6% drop in 2026. That could keep road trips affordable for many families through Labor Day and beyond.
Lower gas costs donโt just help travelers โ they boost the economies of places like Ventura County, where tourism plays a big role. More travelers mean more spending at local restaurants, shops, and hotels. Towns like Ojai, Ventura, and Santa Paula stand to benefit from the seasonal boost.
In Simi Valley, where many residents commute or travel for weekend recreation, cheaper gas adds breathing room to household budgets. And with school out soon, summer road trips may be on the horizon for more families.
Still, Californiaโs average gas price remains high โ $4.89 per gallon as of this week. State taxes and fuel standards drive those numbers. But even with that premium, the statewide trend is pointing in the right direction.
Whether itโs a drive up Highway 1, a camping trip in the Los Padres National Forest, or just a long day at the beach, this yearโs falling fuel prices are making it easier to get out of town. For many in Ventura County, the road ahead looks not only open โ but affordable.
