(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center Foundation has announced the cancellation of this year’s Spotlight Awards gala, originally set for Saturday, May 31, after several key participants tested positive for COVID.
The decision came late Thursday following confirmation that multiple individuals involved in the event — including performers and volunteers — had contracted the virus. Organizers said they could not guarantee a safe environment for guests, staff, or performers.
“This was not a decision we made lightly,” said a spokesperson for the Foundation. “We were looking forward to a night of celebration, but our first responsibility is to protect the health of everyone involved.”
The Spotlight Awards are a longtime tradition in Simi Valley, honoring individuals who have made meaningful contributions to the local arts scene. This year’s honorees included Jan Glasband (Pillar of the Arts), Augusto Guardado (Artist of the Year), Anna Marie Melendrez (Young Artist of the Year), Suzy Jeffords (Educator of the Year), and Audrey Childress (Volunteer of the Year).
The event was also set to feature a full performance of Hairspray, diner-style food catered by Rock N Roll Cafe, and a silent auction benefiting arts programs in the city. All proceeds were to support the Foundation’s work at the Cultural Arts Center, a key venue for theater and performance in Simi Valley.
While organizers hope to reschedule the awards and musical performance at a later date, no new date has been announced. Ticket holders will be contacted in the coming days with options for refunds or possible transfers.
The Foundation has also canceled the online silent auction that was scheduled to run through Saturday night.
“We know how much this event means to our community,” the spokesperson said. “We’re disappointed, but we’re committed to coming back strong when it’s safe to do so.”
