(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) โ Mango may be small, but his presence is unmistakable. At 12 years old and just six pounds, the senior Pomeranian carries the signature traits of his breed โ a full mane of fur and a quiet sense of confidence. Found in Simi Valley and now waiting in kennel 355 at the Camarillo Animal Shelter, Mango is one of many animals across Ventura County hoping this summer brings them home.
Sharing the spotlight is Carlo, a 6-year-old German shepherd mix who, despite tipping the scales at 70 pounds, is known for his gentle nature. Carlo previously stayed at the Simi shelter and now thrives in foster care โ a strong step forward on the path to his forever family. Heโs done well around dogs, kids and strangers at busy events, and has even lived peacefully with a small dog and a cat. His favorite place to be is simply by your side.

Smart and well-mannered, Carlo comes when called, uses a doggie door and enjoys daily walks. His foster home has helped him blossom, showing that with a little time and love, even the most uncertain dogs can become confident companions.
From tiny seniors to big-hearted shepherds, Ventura County Animal Services is filled with dogs of every size, age and story โ all ready for a second chance. With the Fourth of July approaching, shelters often see a surge in intakes from frightened, lost pets, putting extra pressure on space and staff. To encourage adoptions before the holiday, VCAS is waiving adoption fees through July 13 for all onsite shelter dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens.
Adoption hours are 1 to 6 p.m. daily at the Camarillo Animal Shelter (600 Aviation Drive) and the smaller Simi Valley location (670 W. Los Angeles Ave), where Moorpark and Simi residents can stop in and meet adoptable pets in person. While the main site at vcas.us/dogs is the usual go-to, itโs had some intermittent issues. A dependable alternative is 24PetConnect, where you can view updated profiles for Mango (A866667) and Carlo (A859800) and all the other adoptable dogs currently waiting.
Whether youโre drawn to the quiet dignity of a senior dog or the loyal energy of a shepherd, this is the season to make room for a new best friend. Thereโs no better time โ or better reason โ to bring someone home.
