(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — “Please help a dog in any way you can. Adopt. Foster. Share. Repost. Visit. Donate. Take one out for a day.”
That plea, posted by a TikTok user, mirrors the urgent situation unfolding at Ventura County Animal Services, where the shelter population has reached 122 percent capacity. In response, CLAIR is highlighting all adoptable dogs and cats this week. Every animal, whether playful or shy, young or senior, deserves a chance to be seen—and to find home.
At the Simi Valley Animal Shelter, a 4-year-old German Shepherd named Boss has been waiting since February. Staff describe him as a happy dog who loves playing ball, takes treats with enthusiasm, and knows when to settle down and relax. Boss is already neutered and available for adoption now at 670 W. Los Angeles Ave. in Simi Valley.

Over at the Camarillo shelter, several dogs are also hoping to catch someone’s eye. Teddy, a one-year-old mix of French Bulldog and Dachshund, weighs just 22 pounds and will be available for adoption starting Wednesday, July 23. Armen, a 67-pound Belgian Malinois, is already neutered and adoptable now. Just a year old, Armen is looking for an active home and a strong, patient handler. Gracie, a 3-year-old Chinese Sharpei, has quickly become a staff favorite for her calm, leash-savvy demeanor and friendly interactions with other dogs.

For cat lovers, Christian is a 10-week-old neutered kitten now available for adoption. He arrived at the Camarillo shelter in mid-July and is healthy, alert, and ready for a new chapter.

Ventura County Animal Services cares deeply for the animals who enter the system. While some come in happy and healthy, others are injured, sick, frightened, or in need of time and attention to regain trust. Reuniting lost pets with their families is always the top priority. Stray animals are placed on a five-day hold, or seven days if they have identification linking them to a known owner. After the hold expires, unclaimed animals are made available for adoption. If an animal disappears from the online listing, it may mean their family came to reclaim them.
Adoption fees for all dogs and cats are being waived through July 31 to help relieve shelter overcrowding. The shelters are open to the public from 1 to 6 p.m., seven days a week. Visitors can walk in or schedule appointments in advance. Adoption counselors are on hand to help match prospective adopters with animals best suited to their homes and lifestyles.
Free adoptions do not guarantee placement. All interested parties must complete an application and screening process to help ensure successful matches. A pet licensing fee may apply for Ventura County residents.

Foster Families Offer a Lifeline—and the First Step Toward Home
Fostering is another way to help save lives. Foster caregivers provide clean, safe environments where shelter animals can relax and recover. Daily care includes feeding, enrichment, exercise, basic socialization, and sometimes medical transport or support for adoption events. Fosters also help promote their animals on social media and through apps like AdoptMe. Kittens often require just a few weeks of care until they reach age and weight for spay or neuter surgery. Dogs might need a single day out of the shelter or a longer stay to decompress and meet potential adopters.
To begin the process of fostering, fill out an application and complete a brief series of online orientation videos. Matchmaking appointments follow for selecting animals in need of foster care.
