(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Something’s off on Tapo Canyon Road—one of Simi’s best-known bar signs just disappeared.
The familiar green lettered sign for Judge Roy Bean’s, one of the city’s most recognizable dive bars, has come down. There was no farewell post or big announcement. Just a quiet removal, followed by a wave of memories from regulars who spent weekends and weeknights inside.

Judge Roy Bean’s wasn’t just a bar. For decades, it was one of the few night spots in Simi Valley open from 11am to 2am every single day—without serving food. Customers brought their own snacks or had food delivered while the bar focused on what it did best: drinks, dancing, pool, karaoke, and live bands.
The bar’s name paid tribute to Phantly Roy Bean Jr., a 19th-century saloon-keeper and self-proclaimed “Law West of the Pecos.” In the 1800s, Bean held court in a makeshift saloon courthouse along the Rio Grande in southwest Texas. Known for bending the law—and pocketing fines—he became a legend in frontier justice, even though he only sentenced two men to hang, one of whom escaped.

The Simi Valley bar leaned into this outlaw theme with its rowdy energy and loose rules. While the real Judge Roy Bean handed out unconventional rulings from behind a bar, the Simi version handed out Jägerbombs and hosted tribute bands. And for many, it worked.
Over the years, Judge Roy Bean’s gained a reputation as a no-frills venue for live music. Local bands filled the stage on weekends. DJs spun ‘80s and ‘90s hits. People danced under dim lighting, spilled drinks, and celebrated milestones.
“I celebrated my 21st there,” wrote one regular on Reddit. Others recalled karaoke nights, crowded dance floors, and impromptu birthday parties that turned into all-nighters.
The sign’s disappearance sparked discussion online, particularly on Reddit and in neighborhood groups. “It sold a few months back,” one commenter shared. “Not surprising a new owner would want their own theme and decor.”
“It’s gonna be a new bar,” added another. The bar quietly closed a few weeks ago, and word is that a remodeled sports bar will replace it.
In response, a Facebook group that once promoted bar events renamed itself “Remembering Judge Roy Bean’s.” Locals are now using the group to share photos, swap stories, and hold on to memories from the days before the sign came down.
“Bummer,” wrote one former performer. “We played there all the time.”
Another resident added, “Sad there’s hardly any places with live bands left in Simi.”
Details about the new bar are still emerging. Some say the game area inside might be sectioned off and leased separately. Others hope the live music tradition continues under new ownership. As of now, according to Yelp, the original bar is permanently closed, the iconic sign is gone, and the future of the space remains unclear.
