Five Juveniles Now Linked to Assault at Simi Valley’s Regal Plaza
(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — The assault at Regal Plaza earlier this month has now drawn in five suspects, raising community concern over youth violence in Simi Valley. What began as a battery arrest of four juveniles has developed into a wider investigation that now involves possible hate crime and conspiracy charges.
Police say the incident happened on August 1 at Regal Plaza, located on Tapo Canyon Road. Detectives later identified a fifth juvenile suspect, bringing the total to five. On August 20, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office received the cases for review.
The charges under consideration include:
- Assault Likely to Produce Great Bodily Injury (245(a)(4) PC)
- Hate Crime (422.6 PC)
- Criminal Conspiracy (182 PC)
Because the suspects are under 18, the cases proceed under Welfare and Institutions Code Section 602, which treats juvenile offenses in a separate court system. Juveniles can face serious penalties, though the system also emphasizes rehabilitation.
The assault has struck a nerve in a city known for its quiet neighborhoods and family-centered reputation. Juvenile arrests in Ventura County have fallen over the past decade, but incidents involving hate crime allegations remain rare and draw close attention.
Police confirmed the cases first went through the Ventura County Probation Agency for review. By law, cases involving potential racial or discriminatory motives must be referred to prosecutors, even if they don’t meet other mandatory criteria.
The District Attorney’s Office will now decide whether to file formal charges. In the meantime, police say they remain committed to a “thorough and impartial investigation.”
Names of the suspects are withheld due to juvenile confidentiality laws.
