(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) โ A Supreme Court justice is coming to town. A wife, a mother of seven, and a preeminent legal expert, Amy Coney Barrett will appear at the Reagan Library on Sept. 9 to discuss her new book Listening to the Law: Reflections on the Court and Constitution. The book releases the same day, giving context for her talk about how she reads the Constitution.
Barrett was born in New Orleans and graduated from Rhodes College, then Notre Dame Law School. She clerked for Judge Laurence Silberman and later for Justice Antonin Scalia. After private practice in Washington, D.C., she joined the Notre Dame Law faculty in 2002 and was appointed to the Seventh Circuit in 2017. President Donald J. Trump nominated her to the Supreme Court, and she took her seat on Oct. 27, 2020, according to the Courtโs official biography.
The Trump White House archives described her as a respected jurist and noted she was only the fifth woman to serve on the Court at the time of her appointment, highlighting her academic record and her stated commitment to apply the law as written.
The Reagan Presidential Foundation and Instituteโs Center on Civility and Democracy is hosting the program. Fred Ryan will moderate a one-hour conversation from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a book signing from 7 to 8 p.m. The program will also be available to watch virtually on the Reagan Libraryโs YouTube channel.
Why the Court matters โ two recent decisions
Department of State v. Muรฑoz (2024): A woman in the U.S. wanted her husband, who lived abroad, to get a visa so he could move here. When the government denied his visa, she argued it violated her rights. The Court said no โ Americans donโt have a constitutional right to have a spouse from another country admitted. In plain terms, visa denials by U.S. consulates usually stand and courts canโt step in to overrule them.
CFPB v. Community Financial Services Association (2024): Some lenders argued that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was not funded the right way under the Constitution. The Court disagreed, ruling the agencyโs funding system is valid. That means the CFPB can keep running as it has been, enforcing consumer finance rules.
