Learning for Life: Cal Lutheran’s FABulous Fall Series Brings Curiosity to 50+ Community
(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — For many residents of Simi Valley and the Conejo–Valley region, a new season of intellectual exploration is about to begin. California Lutheran University’s Fifty and Better (FAB) program is unveiling its FABulous Fall Lecture Series from November 3 through December 10, offering adults age 50+ a chance to dive into fresh ideas, engage with experts, and connect with peers.
A Lineup That Sparks Conversation
This fall’s lecture topics run the gamut:
- Propaganda in Putin’s Russia: Explore messaging, media control, and public influence in today’s Russia
- The Mind of a Homicide Detective: Gain insight into investigative thinking, logic, and human behavior
- The Greatest Hits of the Holidays: A lighter, more festive exploration—perfect for December
And that’s only a sampling. The full catalog also includes talks on neuroscience, art, historical events, and more. Each talk is delivered in bite-size, 90-minute sessions designed for engagement and discussion.
What makes the FAB series stand out is its hybrid format. Roughly half of the lectures are offered in person at Cal Lutheran’s Thousand Oaks campus; the rest are virtual via Zoom. Every lecture is recorded and archived, so if you can’t make a session in real time, you can still catch up later.
Each lecture is priced at $10, but the program offers flexible bundles that lower the per-lecture cost for those attending multiple sessions. Registration, lecture schedule, and other details are posted online.

Beyond Lectures: Movement, Art & Wellness
FAB isn’t just about sitting and listening. From October 25 to December 12, the program offers a suite of classes and workshops meant to engage body and mind:
- Chair Yoga — both virtual and in person
- Qigong — gentle, meditative movement (in person)
- Tai Chi for Fall Prevention — focused on balance and safety
- Watercolor for Beginners — a brand new series for creative exploration
- Class schedules, fees, and registration are available on the FAB events page.
Why This Matters in Our Area
Programs like Fifty and Better play a unique role in Ventura County’s educational ecosystem. While many adult education offerings focus on vocational training, ESL, or credentialing, FAB leans fully into enrichment. It’s learning for the sake of curiosity, not certification. Cal Lutheran itself frames the program as a space for “university-level courses (without the pressure of grades)”.
Voices From Previous Sessions
On the FAB homepage, the program describes how it originated from the Elderhostel model of the 1980s—a movement that brought university-level learning to older adults.
One recent summer session demonstrates the vitality of the format: lectures like “Songs of the Civil Rights Movement” and “The Role and Evolution of the Federal Air Marshal Service” drew both virtual and in-person audiences.
In feedback collected over past years, many attendees say their favorite part is the community—the chance to engage in conversation after a lecture, form small discussion groups, and hear viewpoints from neighbors they wouldn’t otherwise meet.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of FAB
- Mix formats — Try both in-person and virtual sessions to see what fits you best.
- Bundle smart — If you like multiple topics, bundle packages reduce costs.
- Dive into archives — Missed a lecture? You’ll often find it recorded online.
Try something new — Even if art or movement aren’t your usual go-tos, classes like watercolor or tai chi can open fresh pathways of experience.
For adults in the area who are looking for meaning, connection, or a spark of new learning this fall, the FABulous series offers just that. It’s an invitation to stretch your mind, meet people, and keep learning long after formal school ends.
