(CLAIR | SIMI VALLEY, CA) — As the holiday season settles over Simi Valley, one man has become a beacon of Christmas cheer. For over 40 years, Robert Tatangelo—known affectionately as “Santa Robert”—has brought the magic of Christmas to families, children, and even furry friends in the community.
It all began when Robert was just 7 years old and declared that one day, he would become Santa Claus. By age 21, he made good on that childhood dream. He bought his first Santa suit for $175 at Sears Surplus and hasn’t looked back since. “It’s not just a role,” Robert said. “It’s a calling.”
Simi Valley’s Santa Robert is one of the most recognized and celebrated Santas in the country. In 2015, he earned the prestigious Santa’s Heart Award from the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas, honoring his selfless volunteer work. Last year alone, Robert donated over 100 hours of his time to organizations serving families, seniors, and animals in need.
Throughout the year, Santa Robert volunteers at events like the Sunrise Rotary Thanksgiving Dinner event and the holiday festivities at Strathearn Historical Park. He also visits assisted-living facilities to bring joy to seniors, serves meals to the homeless on Christmas Day in Lancaster, and supports animal rescue organizations like Operation Blankets of Love and St. Martin’s Animal Foundation.
“Seeing their faces light up, there’s no money in the world that can replace that feeling,” Robert said.
For Robert, being Santa is about much more than delivering toys. He’s often asked for things far beyond material gifts—like reuniting families or curing a loved one’s illness. “Santa gives hope to all,” he explained. “When I can’t give them what they ask for, I remind them there’s always a higher power to turn to.”
While his role requires patience, compassion, and a jolly laugh, Robert says it also comes with challenges. “It’s not always easy to hear what some kids wish for,” he admitted. “But being able to bring joy to those moments—that’s what keeps me going.”
In Simi Valley, where Robert has lived for most of his life, he’s not just Santa—he’s a neighbor, a friend, and a source of inspiration. His suits may be custom-made, his sack carefully stitched, but it’s his heart that has made him a cherished figure in the community.
As the holiday season continues, Santa Robert’s message is simple: “To believe.”
And for Simi Valley residents lucky enough to cross paths with him, it’s clear that belief—whether in kindness, magic, or hope—is what makes Christmas truly special.
Reporter’s Note: If you’d like to experience Santa Robert’s magic firsthand, keep an eye out for him at local events or volunteer alongside him to spread holiday cheer. He may wear the red suit, but it’s his heart that truly makes him Santa.
