(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — It’s 1899 in New York City, and the newsboys are on strike — but this summer, they’re bringing the fight (and the footwork) to Simi Valley. The Actors’ Repertory Theatre of Simi is in full swing with its high-energy production of Newsies at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, running through July 20.

Based on the real-life Newsboys’ Strike, the Tony Award-winning musical follows Jack Kelly, a street-savvy newsboy who dreams of a better life. When publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises the price of papers, Jack leads a ragtag band of fellow “newsies” to stand up, sing out and seize the day. The musical, produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. It debuted on Broadway in 2012 and quickly earned praise for its rousing score and tightly choreographed ensemble numbers.
Now, Newsies gets the local spotlight, and the Actors’ Repertory Theatre of Simi delivers it with full force. Directed by David Ralphe, with choreography by Becky Castells and a live orchestra conducted by Gary Poirot, the production is rich with energy and ambition. The cast performs signature numbers like “Carrying the Banner,” “The World Will Know,” “King of New York” and “Santa Fe” with a mix of grit, polish and enthusiasm. From dynamic group scenes to quieter moments of reflection, the show balances spectacle with heart.
The show is suitable for audiences of all ages, and longtime patrons of the Cultural Arts Center will recognize ARTS’s trademark blend of professional-quality staging and strong community spirit. The company, which has been part of the local arts scene since 1995, continues to support theatrical education and mentorship, drawing in local talent from throughout the region.
Performances run Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Note: there is no performance on July 4. Additional 2 p.m. matinees are scheduled for Saturdays July 5, 12 and 19.

The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center is located at 3050 Los Angeles Ave. Tickets are $37 for adults, $32 for seniors and students, and $27 for children. Group rates are available for parties of 10 or more. A $3 processing fee applies to all purchases. With its blend of powerful storytelling, show-stopping dance and live music, Newsies brings a burst of Broadway-caliber energy to the local stage — and reminds us all what’s possible when a few brave voices refuse to back down.
