(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Larry Soderlund has built his teaching career on second chances. At Apollo High School, where students come when the traditional path hasn’t worked, he helps teenagers rediscover confidence, recover credits, and see graduation as a real possibility.
The Simi Valley Education Foundation has launched its new school-year recognitions by naming Soderlund as its first Teacher of the Month.
According to the foundation, Soderlund is honored for his commitment to helping students recover credits and stay on track to graduate. His work benefits not only Apollo students but also others across the district who face obstacles on their path to earning diplomas.
Apollo High School offers a nontraditional route for students who need an alternative learning environment. With smaller classes and focused support, the campus helps teens meet individual academic goals while preparing for the future.
The Teacher of the Month program highlights educators across the Simi Valley Unified School District who make a meaningful difference in their students’ lives. Each honoree is recognized with tokens of appreciation from community partners such as Chick-fil-A, Harley’s Bowl, Logix Federal Credit Union, and the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. Local dignitaries also present personalized certificates of recognition at each monthly celebration, the foundation stated.
“Together, we send a clear message that the business community supports and values the dedication of our teachers,” said Ryan Fowler, president of the foundation’s board.
Since its founding in 1989, the Simi Valley Education Foundation has invested more than $2.5 million into public schools through classroom grants, campus-wide projects, department enhancements, and scholarships for graduating seniors.
