(CLAIR) – The City of Simi Valley Office of Emergency Services and the Ventura County Fire Department is offering a chance for residents and workers to prepare for emergencies and help their community. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training will take place from February 22 to March 29, 2023. It will teach individuals how to assist their family and neighbors during emergency situations.
CERT members will learn skills such as reducing fire hazards, setting up medical treatment areas, assisting emergency responders, evaluating treatment and triage, conducting light search and rescue, and organizing and managing a CERT team.
The CERT training is open to anyone aged 12 or older who lives or works in Simi Valley and is free. Participants ages 12-17 can enroll with a parent or guardian. Each participant will receive a student workbook, a CERT start-up kit, and a certificate upon completion of the entire course. Classes will be held on six consecutive Wednesdays from 6pm – 9pm at the Simi Valley Police Department. The training will end with a one-day disaster simulation, held on a Saturday in April at the VCFD Regional Training Center in Camarillo, CA.
CERT is part of the Citizen Corps, a program that aims to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues, and disasters.
