(D.JORDAN) – For residents of Simi Valley, our local police department plays a critical role in the quality of life our city is able to enjoy.
One of the organizations responsible for the assistance and support the SVPD receives is The Simi Valley Police Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the public safety and well-being of our Simi Valley community.
For more than 25 years, the foundation has worked to bridge the gap between law enforcement and citizens. They provide financial and logistical assistance for unfunded programs, services, and technology. The foundation’s work has made them an essential partner in ensuring the community’s safety and in fostering positive interactions between residents and officers.
In the face of numerous challenges before law enforcement, such as funding shortfalls, recruitment, and retention difficulties, the foundation has been steadfast in its support for the local police department. By raising funds through tax-deductible donations, the foundation has not only provided resources for unforeseen equipment and training needs but also alleviated some of the burden on Simi Valley taxpayers.
One prime example of the foundation’s impact is its unwavering support for the Police Department’s K-9 Program. The foundation fully funds the purchase, training, and equipment for these highly skilled dogs and their handlers, making them an invaluable asset in maintaining safety and security within the community. Thanks to the foundation’s commitment, Simi Valley now boasts four exceptional police dogs trained in various specialties, including narcotics and explosive detection, missing person searches, and building searches.
Moreover, the Simi Valley Police Foundation actively collaborates with other community organizations like the Simi Valley Police Officers’ Association (SVPOA) and the SVP Explorer Program, creating a strong network of support for law enforcement. Through joint fundraising events and initiatives, they have successfully executed several programs that directly benefit the community.
One such program is “Every 15 Minutes,” a powerful anti-drunk-driving initiative organized by the Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA). Other popular events include “Shop with a Cop,” which pairs underprivileged children with officers for holiday shopping, and the family favorite, “Touch a Truck,” a fun-filled event where children can explore various police vehicles up close.
Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions and market fluctuations, the foundation has remained steadfast in its support for the police department and local non-profit organizations.
According to Lee Kennedy, a dedicated member of the foundation and board President, one of their biggest challenges is educating Simi Valley citizens about the crucial role the foundation plays in supporting our local police department.
Looking to the future, the foundation is focused on expanding community participation by inviting members of the community to join their advisory committee and to assist with future fundraising efforts.
The Simi Valley Police Foundation has become an integral part of the community, thanks in large part to the devotion of volunteers like Lee Kennedy. Their tireless efforts have helped make Simi Valley one of the safest cities in the nation.
Residents interested in learning more about the foundation, their programs, or to get involved are encouraged to visit their website or contact them directly. Contributions, whether it be time or resources, are always welcomed.
Kennedy said, “The community’s support for the foundation makes a meaningful difference in enhancing public safety for the residents of Simi Valley.”
Great introduction to the SVP foundation. Thanks for all that you do for our community.
