(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District (RSRPD) is moving forward with new security measures to address vandalism and theft in several local parks. At a meeting on November 6, the district’s board of directors approved the installation of security cameras at key park locations.
The new cameras will be placed at the Rancho Simi Community Pool, Rancho Santa Susana Community Center, and Oak Park Community Center, all of which see frequent use by residents. Board members say the goal is to deter criminal activity and improve safety for park visitors and staff.
“Safety is the number one issue on our residents’ minds,” said Director Ed Abele, reflecting the feedback the district has received from the community.
Rancho Simi Community Park, which has more police calls than any other park in the district, will see the most significant investment. The district allocated $80,000 for cameras at this location. Rancho Santa Susana Community Park, which has experienced graffiti and theft, will also benefit from these upgrades.
RSRPD Manager Dan Paranick explained that the cameras would do more than prevent crime. They will allow staff to respond quickly to accidents, disputes, and other emergencies. “Having video footage also helps law enforcement when incidents happen,” Paranick said.
Some sites, such as the Oak Park Community Center, face unique challenges because of their late hours and isolated locations. Additional attention will be given to these parks to ensure the safety of those who use them.
The district plans to roll out the cameras strategically, focusing on areas with the greatest need. Temporary cameras will be used in spots with frequent problems, giving the district flexibility to respond as needed.
Board Chair Elaine Freeman stressed the importance of prioritizing resources. “We need to focus on the parks where these cameras will make the biggest difference,” she said.
The improvements will help protect Simi Valley’s parks, which are not only recreation spaces but also landmarks of community life. Locations like the Rancho Santa Susana Community Center have long served as gathering places for local events, and ensuring their safety supports their continued role in the city.
As these plans move forward, the district is encouraging residents to stay involved and provide feedback. The added security measures aim to make parks safer and more welcoming for everyone who uses them.
