Big Morning for 27 Seniors: Simi Sunrise Rotary Cl Big Morning for 27 Seniors: Simi Sunrise Rotary Club Awards $21,250 in Scholarships

It was a morning full of joy and anticipation as the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise awarded $21,250 in scholarships to 27 graduating seniors from Simi Valley’s high schools. Selected for their mix of academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and school service, the students were invited to a recent Rotary meeting where they shared their goals and dreams for the future with club members and their families.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise invests in local youth through scholarships like these, continuing a tradition that dates back to the club’s founding in 1985. Funds are raised through community-focused events including the club’s signature Happy Face Music Festival and supported by generous donations from members and sponsors. It’s a cycle of giving that fuels futures and reinforces the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”

Among this year’s awards were three special scholarships honoring individuals who made a lasting impact on the club and the Simi Valley community. Miriam Ahmadian received the Savi Bhim One World One Rotary Scholarship for her global perspective and compassion. Tanvi Ijju was awarded the Rob Hitchcock Memorial Scholarship, a tribute to heartfelt service. Ryan Henderson earned the Blommendahl Memorial Scholarship recognizing a spirit of giving and leadership.

Adopt a Pet for Free. Gain a Shadow, a Snuggle Bud Adopt a Pet for Free. Gain a Shadow, a Snuggle Buddy, a Friend for Life

Animal shelters are full of stories. Some bounce against kennel doors. Others sit quietly, waiting to be noticed. This week, those stories belong to McGinty, Pippin, Jessie, a dachshund pup, and even a curious little hamster. They’re all waiting. Not just for a place to sleep—but for someone to see them.

McGinty has waited the longest. He’s an eight-year-old Siberian Husky with a thick coat and steady gaze. He was found in Oxnard and brought to the Simi Valley Animal Shelter back in March. At 75 pounds, he’s strong and calm, a classic husky with miles still left in him. He doesn’t push for attention. But he’s ready to give it back to anyone who offers it.

Pippin is also a husky, but younger—just two years old. He’s full of energy, alert and eager. He came from Camarillo and is now housed at the Camarillo Animal Shelter. Like most huskies, Pippin needs more than space. He needs movement, structure, and someone who understands that a smart dog needs a challenge.

Over in Kennel 356 is a dachshund mix. He’s just five months old and weighs nine pounds. This little guy came from Ventura and doesn’t have a name yet. He’s a blank slate—wobbly, curious, and hungry to learn. Puppies like him can grow into amazing companions with the right guidance.

This Powerful Reagan Library Film Night Will Leave This Powerful Reagan Library Film Night Will Leave You Speechless—Here’s Why

As Memorial Day approaches—a time for honoring the lives and sacrifices of America’s military heroes—the Reagan Library in Simi Valley will host a powerful evening of film and conversation. On Tuesday, May 20, the public is invited to a screening of the recently released film Brothers After War, followed by a live, on-stage conversation with the film’s director, Jake Rademacher.

From Executive Producer Gary Sinise, Brothers After War documents Rademacher’s journey to reconnect with his brothers and the elite Soldiers and Marines he embedded with during the Iraq War. According to the film’s official description, the story intercuts past and present footage, leading viewers on “an insightful, humorous, and moving journey” as warfighters explore loss, meaning, and hope on their path from soldier to veteran. WATCH THE TRAILER

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with the film screening, followed by a director discussion at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and include one bag of popcorn. Additional snacks and beverages will be available for purchase at the event. Held just days before Memorial Day, the program offers a timely and heartfelt reflection on the experience of military service.

Jake Rademacher, founder of Metanoia Films and Perseverance Productions, brings a uniquely personal perspective to his work, having embedded with four combat units to document the lives of his own brothers in uniform. His storytelling captures both the raw intensity of war and the emotional journey that continues long after soldiers return home.

The event takes place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, located at 40 Presidential Drive in Simi Valley.

Adventist Health Simi Valley is Home to One of the Adventist Health Simi Valley is Home to One of the Nation’s Most Advanced Robotic Surgery Programs

If you’ve ever had surgery—or supported someone who has—you know it’s not just the operation itself that’s hard. It’s the recovery. The weeks of discomfort. The pain medications. The worry about how long it’ll take to feel normal again.

Simi Valley may be the starting point, but the benefits are reaching patients across the Greater Los Angeles area and throughout the country.

Thanks to a growing robotic surgery program at Adventist Health Simi Valley, patients are now having operations through incisions so small they often leave the hospital the same day. They’re going home with less pain, fewer medications, and in many cases, a quicker return to normal life.

At the center of it all is Dr. Andrea Pakula—a highly respected surgeon who’s not only performing these advanced procedures, but also training surgeons from around the world to do the same.

Dr. Pakula: A Surgeon Who Trains the Trainers
You might expect a big-city hospital to have the kind of talent that trains other surgeons. But right here in Simi Valley, Dr. Andrea Pakula is doing just that.

Dr. Andrea Pakula is a national leader in robotic surgery, with deep expertise in hernia repair, bariatric procedures, and emergency surgical care. She’s also one of a select few surgeons in the country certified to train others on the da Vinci Surgical System—the most advanced robotic platform available today.

She was also among the first surgeons in the U.S. to operate using the next-generation da Vinci 5 system, a cutting-edge tool launched at just 10 hospitals nationwide. Adventist Health Simi Valley was one of those chosen sites, with Dr. Pakula leading the effort as Medical Director of Robotic Surgery.

“My goal is always to help people feel safe, informed, and supported,” she says. “If a minimally invasive approach is the best option for a patient, we’ll take it.”
