This Powerful Reagan Library Film Night Will Leave This Powerful Reagan Library Film Night Will Leave You Speechless—Here’s Why

As Memorial Day approaches—a time for honoring the lives and sacrifices of America’s military heroes—the Reagan Library in Simi Valley will host a powerful evening of film and conversation. On Tuesday, May 20, the public is invited to a screening of the recently released film Brothers After War, followed by a live, on-stage conversation with the film’s director, Jake Rademacher.

From Executive Producer Gary Sinise, Brothers After War documents Rademacher’s journey to reconnect with his brothers and the elite Soldiers and Marines he embedded with during the Iraq War. According to the film’s official description, the story intercuts past and present footage, leading viewers on “an insightful, humorous, and moving journey” as warfighters explore loss, meaning, and hope on their path from soldier to veteran. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with the film screening, followed by a director discussion at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and include one bag of popcorn. Additional snacks and beverages will be available for purchase at the event. Held just days before Memorial Day, the program offers a timely and heartfelt reflection on the experience of military service.

Jake Rademacher, founder of Metanoia Films and Perseverance Productions, brings a uniquely personal perspective to his work, having embedded with four combat units to document the lives of his own brothers in uniform. His storytelling captures both the raw intensity of war and the emotional journey that continues long after soldiers return home.

The event takes place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, located at 40 Presidential Drive in Simi Valley.

Adventist Health Simi Valley is Home to One of the Adventist Health Simi Valley is Home to One of the Nation’s Most Advanced Robotic Surgery Programs

If you’ve ever had surgery—or supported someone who has—you know it’s not just the operation itself that’s hard. It’s the recovery. The weeks of discomfort. The pain medications. The worry about how long it’ll take to feel normal again.

Simi Valley may be the starting point, but the benefits are reaching patients across the Greater Los Angeles area and throughout the country.

Thanks to a growing robotic surgery program at Adventist Health Simi Valley, patients are now having operations through incisions so small they often leave the hospital the same day. They’re going home with less pain, fewer medications, and in many cases, a quicker return to normal life.

At the center of it all is Dr. Andrea Pakula—a highly respected surgeon who’s not only performing these advanced procedures, but also training surgeons from around the world to do the same.

Dr. Pakula: A Surgeon Who Trains the Trainers
You might expect a big-city hospital to have the kind of talent that trains other surgeons. But right here in Simi Valley, Dr. Andrea Pakula is doing just that.

Dr. Andrea Pakula is a national leader in robotic surgery, with deep expertise in hernia repair, bariatric procedures, and emergency surgical care. She’s also one of a select few surgeons in the country certified to train others on the da Vinci Surgical System—the most advanced robotic platform available today.

She was also among the first surgeons in the U.S. to operate using the next-generation da Vinci 5 system, a cutting-edge tool launched at just 10 hospitals nationwide. Adventist Health Simi Valley was one of those chosen sites, with Dr. Pakula leading the effort as Medical Director of Robotic Surgery.

“My goal is always to help people feel safe, informed, and supported,” she says. “If a minimally invasive approach is the best option for a patient, we’ll take it.”

How Simi Valley Plans to Spend Your Tax Dollars— How Simi Valley Plans to Spend Your Tax Dollars—Public Meeting May 27

Simi Valley residents will have a chance to learn how the city plans to spend its money during the next fiscal year, which begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2026. A public meeting is set for Tuesday, May 27 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. City staff will present highlights from the proposed budget, answer questions and listen to input from attendees. Comments gathered during the session will be forwarded to the City Council ahead of its vote on June 9.

Starting May 20, the full proposed budget will be available online at simivalley.org, as well as in person at City Hall and the Simi Valley Public Library. For those who want a hard copy, printed versions can be purchased at City Hall.

According to the city’s 2024–25 budget, nearly half of its general operating fund—about $41.9 million—is designated for police services. This includes patrol officers, detectives, dispatchers and other parts of the department’s operations. Public Works receives the next largest share at approximately $14.9 million, which covers the upkeep of roads, sidewalks, storm drains, traffic signals and city facilities like the library and senior center.

In addition to police, the budget includes salaries and benefits for other city staff who work in departments such as planning, engineering, finance and administration. Like many California cities, Simi Valley also contributes to the state’s retirement system, CalPERS, to cover pensions for current and former employees. These pension costs are factored into each year’s budget and continue to be a long-term financial obligation the city manages.

It’s worth noting that the city’s general fund doesn’t cover everything. Simi Valley also has a number of dedicated capital funds that are used for infrastructure and improvement projects—things like roadway resurfacing, drainage upgrades and facility repairs. Those projects are often supported by grants, developer fees or special revenues that are legally required to be used for specific purposes.

Mystery Knife and Fork Still Unclaimed After Simi Mystery Knife and Fork Still Unclaimed After Simi Valley Thanksgiving Dinner

Someone carved turkey. Someone served dinner. Someone walked out of the Simi Valley Senior Center and forgot their knife and fork.

Months later, the carving set is still there.

The utensils turned up after the annual Thanksgiving Eve dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise. Staff spotted them while cleaning up. No one said anything. No one came back.

The knife and fork look well used. The handles are silver. The knife is stamped “Wolfgang Puck Collection.” They aren’t cheap or disposable. Someone brought them from home.

Staff set the utensils aside, expecting a phone call. But the phone never rang.

“We figured someone would notice they were missing,” one staff member said. “But here they are. Still waiting.”

Each year, the Rotary Club and dozens of volunteers serve Thanksgiving dinner to hundreds of seniors and unhoused Simi Valley residents. Volunteers bring food, serve meals, and donate their time—and sometimes their tools. Most take their gear home. This set stayed behind.

Now, the Senior Center wants to return the carving set to its owner. Staff are asking anyone who volunteered or knows someone who did to take a look.

If you believe the carving set is yours, please contact the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise or the Simi Valley Senior Center. Mention your volunteer shift so staff can check your name against the sign-in list.

Until then, the knife and fork sit in storage. They helped serve hundreds of people. Now they’re waiting for one to come back and claim them.
