Simi Valley Hosts Vietnam Wall Memorial This Weeke Simi Valley Hosts Vietnam Wall Memorial This Weekend At Lemon Park

Memorial Day isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a call to remember the cost of freedom. This weekend, Simi Valley offers several ways for residents to step away from routine and into reflection, to stand in quiet gratitude for those who gave everything in service to our country.

At the center of the community’s observance is the return of the Mobile Vietnam Memorial Wall, a striking, half-scale replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C. The Wall will be open around the clock from Friday, May 23 at 3 p.m. through Tuesday, May 27 at 8 a.m. at Rancho Tapo Community Park and Veterans Plaza, 3700 Avenida Simi. The Opening Ceremony will take place Friday at 5:30 p.m., with Nightly Taps sounding at 10 p.m. each evening. A Closing Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 26 at 11 a.m.

On Monday, Memorial Day itself, two other services will offer space for remembrance. A Memorial Day Mass will begin at 10 a.m. at Assumption Cemetery, 1380 Fitzgerald Road, with Archbishop Jose Gomez presiding. The Mass will also be livestreamed at CatholicCM.org and on Facebook at LACatholics for those who wish to attend virtually.

At the same hour, the Annual Simi Valley Memorial Day program will take place at Pioneer Cemetery, 1461 Thompson Lane. Local civic organizations will place flags at each veteran’s grave before the program begins. This year’s ceremony will be brief—about 30 minutes—to allow attendees to travel together to the Vietnam Memorial Wall for continued remembrance. The program includes the raising and lowering of the flag, a wreath laying by local Veteran Service Organizations, and the playing of Taps. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

For those who visit the Wall, the impact is immediate and personal. Whether they come to search for a name, leave a note, or simply stand in silence, visitors become part of a shared act of remembrance that reaches beyond generations.

Red, White and True: Come Raise the Flags and Cele Red, White and True: Come Raise the Flags and Celebrate 250 Years of Army Service in Simi Valley

Simi Valley will mark Flag Day with a public ceremony on Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. in Veterans Court at the Simi Valley Town Center Mall. The annual event includes a ceremonial changing of the flags and a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States Army. Following the ceremony, a cake-cutting will honor the Army’s founding on June 14, 1775—the only military branch established on the same date that Flag Day commemorates. The program is free to attend and expected to last under an hour.

The event features the raising of new flags representing the United States, the state of California, the city of Simi Valley, all branches of the armed forces and local veteran organizations including the American Legion, DAV, Marine Corps League and VFW. The Simi Valley Town Center Mall Management Team purchases the primary flags for the ceremony while each veteran organization contributes its own flag. Civic and community groups are invited to take part, continuing a local tradition of honoring those who serve.

The American flag, with its 13 stripes and 50 stars, is more than a symbol of national pride—it reflects the country’s history and shared ideals. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain, while the stars represent each state in the Union. Adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, the flag has evolved as the nation has grown, with stars added to mark the admission of new states. The current design has been in place since 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state.

Will More Apartments Fix Simi Valley’s Town Cent Will More Apartments Fix Simi Valley’s Town Center Mall? Council Lets Housing Idea Move Forward—with Conditions

The Simi Valley City Council has agreed to let a developer move forward with a proposal that could bring hundreds of homes to the Simi Valley Town Center—signaling the start of a lengthy review process that may reshape the future of the aging mall.

On May 19, the Council voted 4–1 to let developer SteelWave, LLC begin preparing a formal application to partially rezone the site from commercial to residential use. The area in question includes roughly 15.75 acres made up of long-vacant anchor buildings and surrounding parking lots.

City officials stressed the vote does not greenlight any construction. It merely allows the developer to enter the planning process, which will involve detailed environmental review, a development agreement and future public hearings. City Manager Samantha Argabrite explained that all project specifics—how many homes, what kind and when—will be negotiated in the months ahead.

If eventually approved, the proposal could bring between 291 and 375 new homes to the property, with the potential for up to 996 units under state density bonus laws. According to the city’s staff report, the redevelopment would demolish approximately 312,000 square feet of existing retail space—about 53% of the mall’s current 593,000 square feet. Just 42,000 square feet of new commercial construction would be added, resulting in a net loss of roughly 270,000 square feet, or 45% of the mall’s total retail footprint.
