Help Us Find Simi Valley’s Most Inspiring Teache Help Us Find Simi Valley’s Most Inspiring Teacher — Nominations Now Open

A great teacher can change everything. They are more than instructors — they are mentors, motivators and the spark that can ignite a lifetime of learning. Whether it’s the second-grade teacher who made math fun or the high school science teacher who encouraged curiosity, every child remembers that one educator who made a lasting difference.

The Simi Valley Education Foundation is inviting the community to recognize those exceptional teachers through its Teacher of the Month program for the 2025–2026 school year. Each month from September through June, one educator in the Simi Valley Unified School District will be honored for their outstanding work in and beyond the classroom.

Nominees should demonstrate dedication to students, provide exceptional instruction, participate in school or district initiatives and bring creativity and leadership to their role. The foundation encourages the public to think about the educators who have made a meaningful impact not only on individual students but on the classroom as a whole.

Research from the U.S. Department of Education shows that effective teachers are the most important in-school factor for student achievement. A single great teacher can help shape academic success and inspire the confidence and resilience that lasts a lifetime.

The foundation said the program, supported by local businesses, sends a clear message: Simi Valley values its teachers.

To submit a nomination, visit svef.org by the deadline on Monday, July 1, 2025.

Local Golf Instructor Goes National: Steve Holmes Local Golf Instructor Goes National: Steve Holmes to Compete With Ernie Els and Vijay Singh

Most days, you’ll find Steve Holmes at Rustic Canyon Golf Course in Moorpark, offering guidance on a grip adjustment or coaching a junior through their first round. But come May 22, he’ll be trading the familiar terrain of Ventura County for the storied fairways of Congressional Country Club, teeing off alongside legends in the 2025 Senior PGA Championship.

Holmes, 52, earned his spot in the prestigious tournament by finishing fifth at the 2024 Senior PGA Professional Championship. He is one of just 36 PGA professionals aged 50 and older selected to represent the Corebridge Financial Team, a group of instructors and mentors from across the country who will now compete against some of the game’s greats—Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Bernhard Langer, Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker among them.

While those names are known worldwide, Holmes’s journey has unfolded closer to home. Born and raised in Ventura County, he picked up golf as a freshman at Newbury Park High School, later earning a scholarship to UC Irvine and graduating in 1995.

“Ventura County has helped me grow both as a person and a golfer,” he told CLAIR.

He credits the local public courses and the Ventura County Junior Golf Association for giving him the space and support to develop his game. He became a PGA Class A instructor in 2002 and for more than two decades has been a steady presence in regional golf—shaping players, building programs and keeping the game accessible.

It was a morning full of joy and anticipation as the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise awarded $21,250 in scholarships to 27 graduating seniors from Simi Valley’s high schools. Selected for their mix of academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and school service, the students were invited to a recent Rotary meeting where they shared their goals and dreams for the future with club members and their families.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise invests in local youth through scholarships like these, continuing a tradition that dates back to the club’s founding in 1985. Funds are raised through community-focused events including the club’s signature Happy Face Music Festival and supported by generous donations from members and sponsors. It’s a cycle of giving that fuels futures and reinforces the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”

Among this year’s awards were three special scholarships honoring individuals who made a lasting impact on the club and the Simi Valley community.
