Tired of Cooking in the Heat? Simi Valley Has the Tired of Cooking in the Heat? Simi Valley Has the Perfect Summer Solution

(CLAIR | Simi VAlley, CA) — Southern California summers are known for sunshine, backyard parties, and food that brings people together. And nothing says summer here like a plate of warm tacos and a cold margarita.

These days, you don’t even need to cook. Many local spots — like Mission Burrito in Simi Valley — offer large party orders for easy takeout. You can pick up trays of tacos, enchiladas, rice, beans, and chips fresh and hot, ready to serve to a hungry crowd. It’s a simple way to keep guests happy without spending the day in the kitchen.

Across the region — from Simi Valley to San Diego — Mexican food is the favorite when the weather warms up. But this isn’t just a seasonal trend. It’s a deeply rooted part of life in SoCal, and summer brings it to the forefront.

It’s Built for Hot Weather
When the heat rises, heavy meals fall flat — but a chilled ceviche or citrusy tacos hit the spot every time.
Mexican food is light, fresh, and bold. It uses citrus, cilantro, tomatoes, onions, and chilies — all flavors that taste better when it’s hot outside. A taco with grilled fish and lime doesn’t weigh you down like a heavy pasta dish might. A scoop of guacamole or a bite of ceviche feels cooling, not filling. It’s the perfect match for 90-degree days and warm summer nights.

It Brings People Together
Hook: In Southern California, the smell of grilled carne asada is a signal — the party just started.
Southern Californians love to gather outside. Parks, patios, and backyards all become makeshift kitchens and dining rooms in the summer. Mexican food fits right in. Taco bars and burrito spreads are easy to set up and even easier to enjoy. No forks. No fuss. Just tortillas, fillings, and flavor. It turns a casual afternoon into a celebration.

These Exceptional Simi Valley Teens Just Got a Sho These Exceptional Simi Valley Teens Just Got a Shot at Their Dreams — Here’s Who Helped Them Get There

(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Dreams don’t come with a price tag—but the journey to achieve them often does. For several Simi Valley students, that journey just got a little easier thanks to local organizations committed to investing in their futures.

The Simi Valley Education Foundation (SVEF), a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing public education, has awarded $13,000 in scholarships to deserving students from Royal High School, Santa Susana High School and Simi Valley High School. These scholarships aim to support students in their pursuit of college, technical or vocational education.

A significant portion of this funding was made possible by a generous $10,000 donation from the Walt Fuller Foundation. Walter “Walt” Fuller, a respected air traffic control supervisor at Bob Hope Airport and a devoted family man, tragically lost his life in the 2008 Metrolink train crash. His commitment to community and education lives on through the foundation established in his name. Jenny Fuller, Walt’s wife, continues to honor his legacy as a dedicated SVEF board member, according to the Simi Valley Education Foundation website.

In addition to the general scholarships, SVEF has awarded three two-year endowment scholarships ($1,000 per year) to students enrolling in local community colleges. These scholarships are designed to provide opportunities for students who demonstrate a strong desire to succeed but face financial challenges.

2025 Endowment Scholarship Recipients:

Stephanie Mesta – Apollo High School
Sibrah Ali – Santa Susana High School
Avery Cooper – Simi Valley High School
2025 SVEF Scholarship Recipients:

Royal High School: Mirian Ahmadian, Lola Forbes-Black, Mikayla Lev, Anajali Nakkala, Jasmine Panameno, Rory Kohler
Santa Susana High School: Morgan Horney, Bryce Sechirst, Nicholas Thor, Jonas Tieu
Simi Valley High School: Sahasra Anne, Paige Lewis, Shayna Salerno

Among these recipients, Sahasra Anne stands out for her exceptional dedication to both academic excellence and community service.

Simi, Moorpark, Conejo & More Unite for the Most A Simi, Moorpark, Conejo & More Unite for the Most Ambitious Business Networking Event Yet

(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — As the summer sun dips behind the Moorpark hills, the fairways at Tierra Rejada will buzz with more than golf swings — they’ll be alive with deals, ideas and handshakes. Four local chambers of commerce—Simi Valley, Greater Conejo Valley, Moorpark and North West Valley—are joining forces to host the Summer 2025 Mega Mixer, promising the region’s most dynamic night of networking.

Set for Thursday, June 26, from 5:30 to 8 at Tierra Rejada Golf Club, the Mega Mixer will bring together professionals from across East Ventura County and the northwest San Fernando Valley. Sponsored by UCLA Health, the evening will feature live music, a putting contest, samples from local favorites like Enegren Brewing Company and Balcom Canyon Cider and what organizers describe as a lively, come-as-you-are atmosphere. The entertainment lineup includes Jenna the Singing Realtor and the band Wild the River.

“This is one of the most exciting business events we do all year,” said Elizabeth Zachary, a board member of the Simi Valley Chamber’s Emerging Leaders group. “Our Mega Mixer is the perfect mix of great people, great food and a beautiful setting. You really can’t beat it for summer networking.”

But this isn’t just another after-work happy hour. Chambers of commerce play a powerful role in shaping local economies — helping entrepreneurs grow, advocating for business-friendly policies and offering programs that help individuals develop their careers. “Events like this open doors,” said Anthony Angelini, Director of Tourism and Government Affairs for the Simi Valley Chamber. “Whether you’re looking for a job, scouting for collaborators or just want to be more rooted in your community, it starts with showing up.”

The economic case for showing up is strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura metro area generated nearly $66 billion in gross domestic product in 2023, with growth driven by healthcare, manufacturing and tech.

20 Kittens a Day? Simi Shelter Bursting With Fluff 20 Kittens a Day? Simi Shelter Bursting With Fluff — Please Send Formula

(CLAIR | Simi Valley, CA) — Free adoptions for every pet are happening this Saturday, June 7, at Ventura County Animal Services’ Camarillo and Simi Valley shelters. As part of California Adopt a Pet Day, all adoption fees will be covered thanks to the ASPCA, CalAnimals and the SFSPCA. Dogs, cats, rabbits and more are all included, making this a perfect time to welcome a new companion.

Among the many animals waiting for a fresh start are Dewey and Louie, a pair of playful pups just under a year old. They’ve done well with people and other dogs and are available now at the Camarillo shelter. You can preview them — along with every other adoptable animal — at vcas.us/pets.

Also ready for a forever home is Moe, our Pet of the Week. Moe is a mellow, tortoiseshell house rabbit who was returned to the shelter when his family could no longer care for him. The Bunny Brigade volunteers at VCAS have been showering him with love and head pets, and they say he’s a gentle, affectionate companion who would do well in a calm home. To learn more about Moe, email vcasbunnybrigade@gmail.com or visit his profile.

While the focus is on adoption this weekend, there’s another story unfolding behind the scenes: kittens, and lots of them. Shelter staff report that up to 20 kittens are arriving each day — many too young to eat on their own. Foster volunteers are doing everything they can, but resources are stretched thin. When VCAS put out a call last week for more kitten formula, the community responded quickly and generously.

“We have an amazing community,” one supporter wrote on Facebook. “I love being able to help out directly, just like in this situation.” Shelter staff were moved by the swift outpouring of donations and said the extra supplies are already making a big difference for both the kittens and their foster families.

Kitten formula is still in high demand. The shelter uses PetAg KMR Kitten Milk Replacer — either the 12 oz canisters or 5 lb bags.
